Uva Ursi leaves were officially a drug for urinary antiseptic in the U.S. Pharmacopoeia and the National Formulatory from 1820 until 1950. It was first used by Welsh physicians in the 13th century.

USNEA (Usnea barbata) is an antibiotic, antibacterial, antifungal, astringent, antiviral, and diuretic. It's a lichen which grows on tree branches. It is used internally and externally for fungal, viral and bacterial infections. May be used for colds and flu's - use in combination with Echinacea for effects of general antibiotic and antifungal. Externally, Usnea can be made into a salve along with Thuja leaf and Echinacea.

Uva Ursi (Artostaphylos Uva Ursi) contains a compound called arbutin which has the ability to drain excess water from cells. A bushy, evergreen shrub with small, leathery leaves, Uva Ursi (Arctostaphylos Uva-Ursi) was recognized as an important herb by European herbalists of the 13th century. Marco Polo first discovered this herb's uses when in China, and Kublai Khan learned of it during his invasions. When the early North American colonists arrived in the new country, they found the Indians had independently discovered the many uses of Uva Ursi, which derives its name from the Latin Uva or "grape" and Ursus, meaning "bear" since the fruit is rough and unpleasant and said to only appeal to bears. Another name for Uva Ursi is Berberry or Bear's Grape. It is the leaves that are most often employed by man for their beneficial properties.
